Frozen Narratives & Tales of Immigration
First Solo Show by Alyona Skripka. Founders Lab, Brooklyn NY. Dec 19th 2023- Jan 19th 2024
In this immersive odyssey, "Frozen Narratives & Tales of Immigration," Alyona
Skripka, an emerging artist, invites you to explore a deeply personal and evocative
journey through sculpture, video, and collages. Themes of propaganda, immigration,
and the women's journey intertwine to form a cohesive narrative that transcends
mediums.
At the heart of the exhibition stands the birch tree, an unofficial symbol resonating with
Slavic nations. Alyona's tree-like sculptures, crafted from recycled packing material and
painted in weathered-pink hues, reflect her transformation and evolving understanding
of national identity.
The juxtaposition of pink and green colors in the sculptures symbolizes a departure from
the patriarchal society's traditional expectations imposed on the female experience. It
serves as a visual manifesto, challenging established norms and embracing a narrative
of empowerment and self-discovery.
Collages are composed of worn, discolored images, watercolors, and fabric, providing a
visually rich and conceptually layered exploration of identity. They narrate a story that
speaks to the magic of self-discovery within the extended forest of personal history,
hinting at the anticipation of what is yet to come.
The video, featuring a TV set in a sculptural casing, adds another dimension to the
narrative. It portrays a barefoot dance in the snow, seamlessly blending childhood
memories, aspirations, and the stark reality of immigration. As the artist immerses you in
this profound storytelling experience, the exhibition unfolds as a testament to the
transformative power of art and the intricate interplay of personal and collective
narratives. "Frozen Narratives & Tales of Immigration" invites you to traverse the
nuanced landscapes of identity, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of one's identity.
